TAFE NSW Hairdressing Teacher Demonstrates Spot a Spot Course

At the TAFE NSW Coffs Harbour Education Campus, Hairdressing Teacher Sarah Burrell is demonstrating the latest techniques in the Spot a Spot course to her student Nacole Petrie. This innovative course is a collaboration between TAFE NSW, the Australian Melanoma Research Foundation, Hair and Beauty Australia (HABA), Keune, and Airyday. Its aim is to equip hairdressers, barbers, and beauticians with the skills to identify suspicious spots on their clients and how to address their concerns.

All current TAFE NSW apprentices enrolled in Cert III Barbering, Hairdressing, and Cert IV Beauty programs have free access to this online course. For other professionals in the hairdressing, barbering, and beauty industry, the course is available for $50, with the proceeds going back to the Australian Melanoma Research Foundation.

Alison Jones, the Head Teacher of Hairdressing and Beauty at Coffs Harbour Education Campus, emphasized the importance of empowering local hair and beauty professionals with the knowledge to recognize potential skin issues. Given that the Coffs Coast region has a high incidence of melanoma cases, this training is crucial for early detection and prevention.

This course is the first of its kind to specifically target the hair and beauty industry, recognizing their frontline role in promoting skin cancer awareness. Maureen Harding, the National President of HABA, highlighted the practicality of the course, which can be completed in just an hour on a mobile device. It provides valuable information on identifying suspicious spots and initiating conversations with clients about a potentially life-threatening subject.

Dr. Wayne Harvey from the Australian Melanoma Research Foundation emphasized the importance of early detection in improving survival rates for melanoma patients. With 90 percent of melanomas being treatable if caught early, the role of hairdressers and barbers in spotting skin changes cannot be overstated.

By offering this course to aspiring professionals in the industry, TAFE NSW is taking proactive steps in upskilling the next generation to have potentially life-saving conversations with their clients. This initiative not only benefits the individuals taking the course but also contributes to the overall health and well-being of communities across New South Wales.

As the industry continues to evolve, staying updated on the latest techniques and practices is essential for professionals to provide the best possible care for their clients. The Spot a Spot course not only enhances the skills of hairdressers, barbers, and beauticians but also raises awareness about skin cancer and the importance of early detection.

With the support of industry partners and experts in the field, TAFE NSW is leading the way in promoting health and wellness within the hair and beauty industry. By investing in upskilling techniques like the Spot a Spot course, professionals can make a significant impact on the lives of their clients and contribute to the overall well-being of the community.
