One such technology is AI-assisted writing tools, which have the potential to improve motivation, accuracy, and collaboration in writing tasks. However, the effectiveness of these tools depends on how they are integrated into educational contexts and on teachers' perceptions.
An exploratory study conducted in Italy between February and April 2025 with 1,072 pre-service teachers examined perceptions and practices related to AI-assisted writing tools for student self-assessment. The study focused on a restricted set of widely used AI-based generative writing tools available at the time of data collection. The research adopted a mixed embedded design combining quantitative and qualitative analyses.
The findings revealed that while most teachers expressed cautious or sceptical views about the general usefulness of AI-assisted writing tools, they had more positive attitudes toward specific tools such as ChatGPT, particularly for sub-skills like spelling and text composition. Teachers who experimented with these tools reported benefits for student motivation, engagement, and skill development, although concerns remained about critical thinking and over-reliance on algorithms.
