The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has unveiled new educational tools on its Anti-Doping Education and Learning (ADEL) platform, specifically aimed at educating young athletes about the principles of clean sport. These additions include the ADEL for Youth Athletes course and a set of downloadable resources.
The ADEL for Youth Athletes course is tailored for athletes aged 11-15 who participate in sports through school or clubs. It introduces the concept of clean sport and empowers learners with the skills to navigate challenges in their athletic endeavors. The course features insights from WADA’s Athlete Council members, sharing their experiences of competing cleanly and advocating for a fair and positive sporting environment.
Amanda Hudson, WADA’s Director of Education, emphasized the importance of expanding educational programs to reach a broader audience, especially for Anti-Doping Organizations (ADOs) with limited resources. By providing comprehensive content for athletes at various stages of their sporting journey, WADA aims to support ADOs in educating athletes from grassroots levels to elite competition.
Moreover, WADA has introduced four downloadable resources developed by a sub-group of the Education Committee. These resources cater to youth and talented-level athletes, parents, and athlete support personnel, covering topics such as testing procedures, the Prohibited List, supplements, and the significance of speaking up in challenging situations.
Kady Kanouté Tounkara, Chair of WADA’s Education Committee, highlighted the significance of these resources in enhancing access to clean sport education. By offering downloadable materials that can be accessed offline on computers or mobile devices, WADA promotes inclusivity, enabling individuals without continuous internet connectivity to stay informed and compliant with anti-doping regulations.
Notably, the new course and downloadable resources are currently available in English, French, and Spanish. ADOs interested in translating these materials into other languages can request assistance through the ADEL Helpdesk. It is essential to note that athletes under the age of 16 must use a parent or guardian’s email address to register an account on the ADEL platform.
These educational initiatives reflect WADA’s ongoing commitment to promoting clean sport and fostering a culture of integrity and fairness in athletic competition. By equipping young athletes with knowledge and skills to uphold anti-doping principles, WADA aims to nurture a new generation of athletes who compete ethically and uphold the values of sport.
