Interdisciplinary E-Learning Curriculum Enhances Delirium Care in Nursing Homes

A modified Delphi study was conducted to develop a curriculum for interdisciplinary e-learning on delirium in nursing homes. Delirium, characterized by acute onset cognitive impairments, is a critical issue in nursing home care, particularly affecting vulnerable residents. Nurses play a crucial role in detecting delirium, while general practitioners may struggle with proper recognition and treatment. The lack of specific education on delirium in nursing homes prompted the need for an e-learning curriculum to enhance healthcare professionals’ knowledge.

The study formulated delirium-specific competencies based on existing literature and engaged an expert panel to assess their relevance through a two-stage Delphi study. A total of 120 competencies were formulated, with the majority addressing both disciplines of nursing and general practice. Through the Delphi process, 97 competencies were ultimately included in the final curriculum, with a focus on knowledge, skills, and attitudes related to delirium in nursing home settings.

The curriculum covered various modules, including definitions, causes, symptoms, therapy, prevention, and terminal delirium. While most competencies were deemed relevant for both nurses and GPs, some discipline-specific competencies were also identified to cater to distinct learning needs. The study highlighted the importance of differentiating between delirium, dementia, and depression, emphasizing the essential role of nursing staff in delirium prevention and management.

The interdisciplinary curriculum developed through this study serves as a foundation for future e-learning initiatives aimed at improving delirium-specific knowledge among healthcare professionals in nursing homes. By addressing the specific needs and responsibilities of nurses and GPs in delirium care, the curriculum aims to enhance the quality of care provided to residents and promote interprofessional collaboration in managing delirium cases.

Overall, the study underscores the significance of ongoing education and training in delirium care for healthcare professionals working in nursing home settings. By leveraging e-learning platforms and competence-based curricula, the study aims to bridge knowledge gaps and improve the care outcomes for residents at risk of delirium.
