Anthropic, a US AI startup, recently announced updates to its data policy for users of its platform Claude. The new policy introduces an option for users to allow their conversations and coding sessions to be utilized for training future AI models. This change, however, does not affect enterprise services, which remain governed by separate agreements and are not subject to the new training policy.
The update applies to all users of Claude, including those on Free, Pro, and Max plans, as well as users of Claude Code. Users are required to make a decision regarding this new policy by September 28, 2025. Those who opt in will have their conversations retained for up to five years, with the data being used to enhance areas such as reasoning, coding, and analysis.
For users who choose not to participate, the existing policy stands, where conversations are deleted within thirty days unless retained for legal or policy-related reasons. The new policy specifically excludes enterprise products like Claude for Work, Claude Gov, Claude for Education, and API access through partners such as Amazon Bedrock and Google Cloud Vertex AI, which are subject to their own contractual terms.
Anthropic clarified that new users will also be presented with this choice during sign-up, while existing users will receive notifications prompting them to review their privacy settings. The company assured users that they retain control over their data and that manually deleted conversations will not be utilized for training purposes.
