UNESCO, in collaboration with the KIX Africa 21 Hub, is working to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) and digital literacy into classrooms across francophone Africa. The initiative aims to equip teachers and students with the necessary skills to navigate the digital landscape effectively. This effort comes in response to the growing prevalence of AI and the need to ensure that it contributes positively to educational equity.
The project is initially being piloted in four countries: Benin, Burundi, Côte d’Ivoire, and Senegal. These countries are at the forefront of developing national AI competency frameworks tailored to the needs of their education systems. The frameworks serve as strategic guides for educational transformation, emphasizing the importance of human-centered approaches in integrating AI technologies.
One of the key objectives of the initiative is to translate digital learning resources into local languages to enhance accessibility and inclusivity. Côte d’Ivoire has taken significant steps towards digitalizing its education system by developing comprehensive ICT competency frameworks for teachers and administrators. Furthermore, the translation of digital resources into local languages is a critical component of the project.
