Virtual Reality (VR) technology has revolutionized educational practices by offering immersive environments that enhance learning experiences. While previous research has explored the potential of VR in language learning, there is still much to uncover due to limited understanding of its capabilities. This study focuses on the role of VR in improving English proficiency within the context of the film industry in Thailand. The research developed a VR App called “EngLab for Film” with interactive units related to filmmaking. Through structured questionnaires and data analysis, the study found that VR-based learning enhances motivation, vocabulary acquisition, and provides an alternative to traditional methods. However, technical aspects like video clarity need improvement. This study highlights the transformative potential of VR in language education, offering insights for its integration into specialized professional settings.
The evolution of the metaverse, a three-dimensional virtual world, has garnered significant interest in educational settings. The use of VR headsets in classrooms has the potential to provide engaging and immersive learning experiences. In Thailand, the adoption of Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs) aligns with the country’s educational goals and strategies. VLEs promote collaborative learning and offer interactive 3D spaces that enhance student engagement. The metaverse integrates VR with web and extended reality technologies, creating a multifaceted digital environment with diverse applications in education.
VR technology creates computer-generated environments that allow learners to engage with simulations and experiences that are not easily replicable in real life. From exploring distant planets to practicing hands-on skills in industries like medicine and engineering, VR offers a unique approach to learning. The metaverse expands on VR by integrating technologies like augmented reality and blockchain to create inclusive spaces for learning and social interaction. This convergence enables immersive educational experiences that cater to diverse learning styles and needs.
The study conducted on VR-based learning in the Thai film industry emphasizes the importance of student engagement, independent learning, and motivation in language acquisition. VR environments enhance engagement by immersing students in real-world scenarios, fostering deeper connections with the material. Independent learning is promoted through personalized learning routes and self-directed study opportunities. Motivation plays a crucial role in language learning, influencing learners’ willingness to engage with the material. VR-based learning environments have the potential to significantly enhance student engagement, independent learning, and motivation in language education.
The study employed a quantitative research method to evaluate the effectiveness of the “EngLab for Film” VR project in improving English language skills. Data collected through structured questionnaires and statistical analysis revealed that motivation and independent learning are strong predictors of vocabulary performance. The study underscores the importance of VR in language learning, particularly in specialized professional contexts like the film industry. Future research should focus on longitudinal studies to explore the long-term impact of VR on language skill acquisition and the continued integration of technology in educational practices.
In conclusion, the study demonstrates the efficacy of VR-based learning in improving English proficiency in the Thai film industry. The “EngLab for Film” application showcases how VR technology can enhance language learning experiences and overcome linguistic barriers. By providing interactive and practical examples related to filmmaking, vocabulary building, and contextual understanding, VR offers a dynamic approach to language acquisition. Addressing technical challenges and adapting VR tools to align with learners’ interests and professional needs are crucial for successful integration of VR in educational settings.
