Duke University Enhances Learning Experience with New Cloud-Based LMS

Duke University is set to launch an upgraded cloud-based Learning Management System (LMS) on May 13, offering enhanced functionality and a more streamlined user experience. This transition marks a significant shift for the system used by staff and faculty to manage employee training, distinct from the Canvas LMS.

The current web-based application will be replaced by the new LMS powered by Saba, necessitating the offline transfer of over 14 years of data from May 6 to the launch date. Tim Evans, a Duke Health Integrated Practice Program Manager involved in system testing, highlighted the improved user interface and visual appeal as major advantages of the upgrade.

Brian Aucoin, Duke Health Technology Solutions Senior IT Manager, revealed that the Duke LMS currently serves 40,000 active users with a course catalog of 3,000 offerings, predominantly online training. The transition to a cloud-based system promises faster updates, access to learning histories, and enhanced analytics for tracking and reporting.

While much of the upgrade may go unnoticed by users initially, the new system aims to facilitate self-discovery of classes and provide long-term benefits to users. It is recommended that ongoing training be completed by May 6 to avoid losing progress, with existing course registrations within the last 90 days set to be migrated to the new platform.

Completed training records will be transferred to the Saba Cloud LMS, maintaining access through existing links on the Duke Human Resources website and Duke@Work Self-Service site. A web tutorial has been developed to introduce users to the new platform and its features, ensuring a smooth transition.
